BIOMASS INDUSTRY

Air Emission Control for Biomass Industry

The increasing demand for renewable or sustainable energy worldwide has spurred the development of alternative energy sources that will replace traditional natural gas and oil, along with the encouragement of their rising costs. The burning of these alternative sources for energy production requires proven air emission control systems with demonstrated expertise. Applied technologies are necessary, and when burning ethanol, wood pellets, poultry litter, and horse bedding, specific dry and wet adsorbent injection is required for particulate control. While pure forest products usually necessitate only particle control during combustion, due to challenges in raw material supply and the blending of different solid materials, dry particle filtration alone will not be sufficient. The combustion of mixed raw materials leads to:

Ethanol Production: Particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) can typically be found in stack gases.

MDSJ AIR Air Emission Control Equipment

In the biomass industry, MDSJ AIR employs various control technologies:

For removing aldehydes and/or alcohols, acids, and different pollutants from industrial process gas streams, both dry and wet processes are used. The absorption system captures and oxidizes acids or aldehydes using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), nitric acid (HNO3), or sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and aqueous catalysts. These chemicals are dosed in wet scrubbers, while dry sorbents like sodium bicarbonate, unslaked lime granules, or powdered activated carbon are used. Particle control is achieved through multi-cyclones, bag filters, or electrostatic precipitators (ESPs). Specifically, in facilities that burn only forest products, MDSJ AIR’s designed VYMS 98 MULTI-CYCLONE application has been found to lower emission values to below 200mg/m³. This solution is ideal for facilities with an accepted limit of 350mg/m³, offering advantages such as single-point ash removal bags, no need for compressed air, reduced pressure drop, continuous operation, extended lifespan, and significant savings. MDSJ AIR possesses extensive experience and expertise in these areas accumulated over many years.
